Target Information
Troponin (Tn) is the central regulatory protein of striated muscle contraction. Tn consists of three components:
- Tn-I: Inhibitor of actomyosin ATPase
- Tn-T: Contains the binding site for tropomyosin
- Tn-C: Binds calcium ions
The binding of calcium to Tn-C abolishes the inhibitory action of Tn on actin filaments. As calcium-ion uptake by troponin-C occurs, muscle thin filaments undergo allosteric changes enabling actin-myosin interaction, ATP hydrolysis, and tension generation.
