Target Information
Haptoglobin captures and combines with free plasma hemoglobin to enable hepatic recycling of heme iron and prevent kidney damage. It acts as an antioxidant, has antibacterial activity, and modulates the acute phase response. Hemoglobin/haptoglobin complexes are cleared by the macrophage CD163 scavenger receptor via endocytic lysosomal degradation.
The uncleaved form of allele alpha-2 (2-2), known as zonulin, regulates intestinal permeability by controlling tight junction disassembly and immune tolerance balance.
