Target Information
Vitamin K epoxide reductase complex subunit 1 (VKORC1) is an enzyme responsible for reducing vitamin K 2,3-epoxide to its active form, essential for blood clotting. This reduced vitamin K is required for the carboxylation of glutamic acid residues in blood-clotting proteins. Deficiency or inhibition of VKORC1 (e.g., by warfarin) can cause fatal bleeding. Mutations in VKORC1 are associated with deficiencies in vitamin K-dependent clotting factors and warfarin resistance in humans and rats.
