CHMP6는 CHMP (chromatin-modifying protein / charged multivesicular body protein) 패밀리에 속하며, ESCRT-III 복합체의 구성 요소로 작용합니다. ESCRT-III는 표면 수용체 단백질의 분해 및 내포성 다소포체(MVB) 형성에 관여합니다. 일부 CHMP 단백질은 핵과 세포질/소포성 분포를 모두 가지며, CHMP1A는 MVB 형성과 세포 주기 조절에 모두 필요합니다 (Tsang et al., 2006).
