Target Information
The CD4 antigen is involved in the recognition of MHC class II molecules and acts as a co-receptor for HIV.
CD4 is primarily expressed in a subset of T-lymphocytes (T helper cells) and can also be found in monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells.
At the tissue level, CD4 expression occurs in thymus, lymph nodes, tonsils, spleen, and certain regions of the brain and gut.
CD4 contributes to T-cell activation via association with the T-cell receptor complex and protein tyrosine kinase Lck.
It may also mediate neuronal damage in infectious and immune-related diseases of the CNS.
Multiple alternatively spliced transcripts have been identified (RefSeq, July 2017).
