DEGS2 encodes a bifunctional enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of phytosphingolipids in human skin and other phytosphingolipid-containing tissues.
This enzyme acts as a sphingolipid delta(4)-desaturase and also as a sphingolipid C4-hydroxylase.
