Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and function in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein content compared to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA.
MRPS15 encodes a 28S subunit protein belonging to the ribosomal protein S15P family. The human protein is over twice the size of its E. coli counterpart, retaining conserved 12S rRNA binding sites. Between human and mouse, MRPS15 is the least conserved among small subunit ribosomal proteins. Pseudogenes are found on chromosomes 15q and 19q.
