Target Information
The PAX gene family encodes transcription factors that are active during early embryonic development. These genes contain a paired box domain that enables DNA binding and regulation of gene expression. Pax-2, in particular, is expressed in the developing kidney, especially in condensing metanephric mesenchyme and early epithelial structures. Expression of Pax-2 decreases as renal epithelium matures but persists in Wilms tumor, correlating with poorly differentiated epithelial cells. The Wilms tumor suppressor protein WT1 is known to repress Pax-2 transcription, indicating a regulatory relationship between these genes.
