Target Information
Beta-2-microglobulin (B2M) is a 12–14 kDa protein that forms part of the MHC class I complex. It is expressed on many cell types including lymphocytes, thymocytes, monocytes, granulocytes, platelets, endothelial and epithelial cells, but absent on erythrocytes.
B2M is homologous to immunoglobulin constant regions and has a beta-pleated sheet structure. It is involved in antigen processing and presentation, TCR signaling, and CD8⁺ cell activation.
Encoded by the B2M gene on chromosome 15, mutations can cause hypercatabolic hypoproteinemia. B2M levels are used to assess renal function and as a prognostic marker in HIV infection.
