Target Information
Isoform 1 functions as an extracellular chaperone that prevents aggregation of nonnative proteins and stress-induced aggregation of plasma proteins. It inhibits amyloid fibril formation by several proteins (e.g., APP, APOC2, SNCA) and maintains unfolded proteins for subsequent refolding by other chaperones such as HSPA8/HSC70.
Secreted isoform 1 protects cells against apoptosis and complement cytolysis. Intracellular isoforms interact with ubiquitin and SCF E3 ligase complexes, promoting proteasomal degradation of target proteins and modulating NF-κB activity. Nuclear isoforms promote apoptosis, while mitochondrial isoforms suppress BAX-dependent cytochrome c release.
