Target Information
Potassium channels are ubiquitously expressed proteins that perform essential functions in both excitable and non-excitable cells. The large conductance, calcium-activated potassium channel (Maxi K⁺) is unique because its activation depends on both intracellular calcium increase and membrane depolarization. The Maxi K⁺ channel consists of an alpha homotetramer with voltage and calcium-binding domains, and in vascular smooth muscle, it associates with a beta-subunit in a 1:1 ratio. The beta-subunit lowers the calcium concentration required to open the channel by 5–10 fold, making it a potential therapeutic target for regulating blood flow and blood pressure.
