Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and facilitate protein synthesis within mitochondria. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with an estimated 75% protein to rRNA ratio, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes where this ratio is reversed. Mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA and show significant sequence variability across species, complicating recognition by homology. The MRPL21 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, and multiple transcript variants have been identified, some potentially subject to nonsense-mediated decay (NMD).
