Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is one of several proteins sequentially incorporated into the cornified cell envelope during terminal differentiation of keratinocytes at the outer layers of the epidermis. It interacts with periplakin, a precursor of the cornified cell envelope. Its cellular localization and insolubility suggest a role in epithelial differentiation, contributing to epidermal integrity and barrier formation. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been observed.
