Target Information

Functions in nuclear protein import as a nuclear transport receptor. Serves as a receptor for nuclear localization signals (NLS) in cargo substrates. Mediates docking of the importin/substrate complex to the nuclear pore complex (NPC) through binding to nucleoporin, and translocation through the pore occurs via a Ran-dependent mechanism.
At the nucleoplasmic side of the NPC, Ran binds to the importin, causing dissociation of the importin/substrate complex, and importin is re-exported to the cytoplasm where GTP hydrolysis releases Ran.
This process ensures directionality of nuclear import through an asymmetric distribution of Ran-GTP and Ran-GDP between cytoplasm and nucleus.
Mediates the nuclear import of H2B histone, RPS7, and RPL18A, preventing cytoplasmic aggregation by shielding exposed basic domains. May also import H2A, H3, H4 histones, RPL4, and RPL6.
