Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are essential for protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with an estimated 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes. Mammalian mitoribosomes lack the 5S rRNA found in prokaryotes. The MRPS11 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein with high sequence similarity to ribosomal protein S11P family members. A pseudogene is located on chromosome 20, and multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
