Background
Histones are basic nuclear proteins responsible for the nucleosome structure of chromosomal fibers in eukaryotes. Two molecules each of H2A, H2B, H3, and H4 form an octamer around which approximately 146 bp of DNA is wrapped to form nucleosomes. The linker histone H1 binds to linker DNA between nucleosomes and contributes to chromatin compaction. This gene encodes a replication-dependent histone H2A family member, located on chromosome 6p22–p21.3, and transcripts lack polyA tails but contain a palindromic termination element.
