Background
Olfactory receptors interact with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate neuronal responses that trigger the perception of smell. These proteins belong to the large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) encoded by single coding-exon genes. They share a seven-transmembrane domain structure common to many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and are responsible for the recognition and transduction of odorant signals. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome, and its nomenclature is independent among organisms.
