배경 정보 (Background)
This gene encodes the alpha chain of type XVIII collagen, one of the multiplexins—extracellular matrix proteins containing multiple triple-helix domains interrupted by non-collagenous domains.
The long isoform includes an N-terminal domain homologous to frizzled receptors. Proteolytic processing at endogenous cleavage sites in the C-terminal domain produces endostatin, a potent antiangiogenic protein that inhibits angiogenesis and tumor growth.
Mutations in this gene are associated with Knobloch syndrome, characterized by retinal abnormalities, suggesting that type XVIII collagen plays an important role in retinal structure and neural tube closure.
