Background
Olfactory receptors interact with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate a neuronal response that triggers the perception of smell. These receptor proteins belong to a large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) derived from single coding-exon genes. They share a seven-transmembrane domain structure with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors, mediating odorant signal transduction via G proteins. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome. This specific olfactory receptor gene is a segregating pseudogene, where some individuals possess a functional allele, while others carry a non-functional version.
