Background
This gene encodes a member of the intermediate filament family. Intermediate filaments, along with microtubules and actin microfilaments, make up the cytoskeleton. The protein encoded by this gene maintains cell shape, cytoplasmic integrity, and stabilizes cytoskeletal interactions. It also participates in immune responses and regulates LDL-derived cholesterol transport from lysosomes to esterification sites. Vimentin functions as an organizer of key proteins involved in attachment, migration, and cell signaling. Mutations in this gene can cause a dominant pulverulent cataract. (RefSeq, Jun 2009)
