Background
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and play a role in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit. They have about 75% protein to rRNA ratio compared to prokaryotic ribosomes, which is reversed. Another difference is that prokaryotic ribosomes contain a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary greatly among species, making sequence homology recognition difficult. Pseudogenes corresponding to this gene are found on chromosomes 5q and 8p. (RefSeq, May 2011)
