Background
Mitochondrial uncoupling proteins (UCPs) belong to the mitochondrial anion carrier protein (MACP) family. They uncouple oxidative phosphorylation from ATP synthesis, dissipating energy as heat (mitochondrial proton leak). UCPs mediate anion transfer across the mitochondrial inner membrane and proton return, thereby reducing mitochondrial membrane potential. Expression varies by tissue, with highest levels in skeletal muscle. UCP2 is implicated in nonshivering thermogenesis, obesity, and diabetes. The gene cluster order is 5′-UCP3-UCP2-3′.
