Background
This gene encodes a receptor belonging to the Tie2 family of protein tyrosine kinases. The encoded protein has a unique extracellular region containing two immunoglobulin-like domains, three EGF-like domains, and three fibronectin type III repeats. Angiopoietin-1 binds to this receptor to mediate signaling involved in embryonic vascular development. Mutations in this gene are associated with inherited venous malformations of the skin and mucous membranes. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
