Background
Actins are highly conserved proteins involved in various types of cell motility. Polymerization of globular actin (G-actin) forms filamentous actin (F-actin) as a two-stranded helix, where each actin binds to four others. The encoded protein belongs to the actin family, composed of alpha, beta, and gamma isoforms. Alpha actins are mainly found in muscle tissues and are major constituents of the contractile apparatus. Defects in this gene are associated with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (IDC) and familial hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (FHC).
