Background
This gene is a member of the synapsin gene family. Synapsins encode neuronal phosphoproteins that associate with the cytoplasmic surface of synaptic vesicles. They play roles in synaptogenesis and neurotransmitter release modulation, suggesting involvement in neuropsychiatric diseases. Synapsin I regulates axonogenesis and synaptogenesis, serving as a substrate for multiple protein kinases. Phosphorylation may regulate its function in nerve terminals. Mutations may be linked to X-linked neuronal degenerative disorders such as Rett syndrome. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
