Background
Sjogren syndrome antigen B (SSB) is a human protein involved in various aspects of RNA metabolism. It binds and protects poly(U) termini of nascent RNA polymerase III transcripts from exonuclease digestion, processes pre-tRNA precursors, acts as an RNA chaperone, and interacts with viral RNAs such as hepatitis C virus. Autoantibodies against SSB are found in sera of patients with Sjogren syndrome and systemic lupus erythematosus. Alternative promoter usage results in two transcript variants encoding the same protein. (RefSeq, Jun 2014)
