Cellular Localization	Nucleus speckle, Cytoplasm, Nucleus. Acetylation contributes to nuclear localization, while deacetylation by HDAC3 induces cytoplasmic delocalization (PubMed:15297880). Colocalizes with SOX6 (PubMed:11818535), CAML (PubMed:15746192), ZNF208 isoform KRAB-O, and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH). Nuclear import facilitated by XPO4 (PubMed:19349578).
Background	This intronless gene encodes a transcription factor belonging to the HMG-box family of DNA-binding proteins. It functions as the testis-determining factor (TDF), initiating male sex determination. Mutations in this gene result in XY females with gonadal dysgenesis (Swyer syndrome), while translocation of Y-chromosomal regions containing this gene to the X chromosome causes XX male syndrome.
