Background
This gene encodes the enzyme responsible for the excision of 8-oxoguanine, a mutagenic base byproduct resulting from reactive oxygen exposure. The enzyme exhibits lyase activity for chain cleavage. Alternative splicing of the C-terminal region produces two major groups of splice variants: type 1 (ending with exon 7) and type 2 (ending with exon 8). All variants share the N-terminal region containing a mitochondrial targeting signal essential for mitochondrial localization. Multiple splice variants have been described, though not all full-length forms are confirmed.
