Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and assist in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, in contrast to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary significantly among species, making sequence-based identification difficult. The DAP3 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein involved in apoptotic pathways triggered by TNF-alpha, Fas ligand, and gamma interferon. This protein may bind ATP/GTP and function as a partner of the mitoribosomal protein S27. Splice variants in the 5′ UTR exist but encode the same protein. Pseudogenes are located on chromosomes 1q and 2q.
