Target Information
Tyrosinase catalyzes the first two steps and at least one subsequent step in the conversion of tyrosine to melanin. It exhibits both tyrosine hydroxylase and dopa oxidase activities and requires copper for its function. Mutations in the gene cause oculocutaneous albinism, while nonpathologic polymorphisms contribute to skin pigmentation variation. The human genome also contains a pseudogene similar to the 3′ half of this gene.
