Target Information
Annexin VI belongs to a family of calcium-dependent membrane and phospholipid binding proteins. Although their functions are not fully defined, several annexins are implicated in membrane-related events along exocytotic and endocytotic pathways.
The annexin VI gene (~60 kbp, 26 exons) encodes a ~68 kDa protein with eight 68-amino acid repeats separated by variable linkers. It shares strong similarity with human annexins I and II, each containing four such repeats.
Exon 21 is alternatively spliced, producing two isoforms differing by a 6-amino acid insertion at the start of the seventh repeat. Annexin VI is involved in endosome aggregation and vesicle fusion in secreting epithelia during exocytosis.
