Target Information
Glutathione peroxidases (GPXs) are ubiquitously expressed enzymes that catalyze the reduction of hydrogen peroxide and organic hydroperoxides using glutathione.
GPX1 (classical cytosolic/mitochondrial GPx) is a selenium-dependent enzyme and the first discovered member of the GPx family.
Other family members include:
- GPX2 (GI-GPx): Expressed in gastrointestinal epithelium
- GPX3 (pGPx): Extracellular, mainly expressed by the kidney and released into circulation
- GPX4 (PH-GPx): Reduces hydroperoxides in membranes and lipids
Most mammalian GPX family members, except for Cys-containing GPX3 and epididymis-specific GPX5, possess selenocysteine at the active site.
