Target Information
The alpha (HBA) and beta (HBB) loci determine the structure of the two types of polypeptide chains in adult hemoglobin (HbA). Normal adult hemoglobin consists of two alpha and two beta chains.
Mutations in the beta globin gene can cause disorders such as:
- Sickle cell anemia (mutant beta globin)
- Beta-zero-thalassemia (absence of beta chain)
- Beta-plus-thalassemia (reduced beta globin levels)
The gene order in the beta-globin cluster is 5'-epsilon-gamma-G-gamma-A-delta-beta-3'.
