Target Information
XBP1 encodes a transcription factor that regulates MHC class II genes by binding to an X box promoter element. This bZIP protein also acts as a transcription factor for the T cell leukemia virus type 1 promoter, enhancing viral protein expression by partnering with a viral transactivator.
During endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, XBP1 mRNA undergoes unconventional splicing by IRE1, removing 26 nucleotides and producing the active isoform XBP1(S). The unspliced isoform XBP1(U) functions as a negative feedback regulator, shutting off target gene transcription during recovery from ER stress.
A pseudogene of XBP1 is localized to chromosome 5.
