Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) family, part of the transforming growth factor-beta superfamily. These proteins are key regulators of growth and differentiation. BMPs were first identified by their ability to induce endochondral osteogenesis in vivo. BMP4 plays a crucial role in the onset of endochondral bone formation in humans, and reduced expression is linked to bone disorders such as Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva. Alternative splicing in the 5′ untranslated region produces three variants encoding the same protein.
