Target Information

AFP (Alpha Fetoprotein) is a major plasma protein produced by the yolk sac, intestinal tract, and liver during fetal life. AFP expression in adults is often associated with hepatoma or teratoma. Hereditary persistence of AFP may also occur in individuals without pathology. AFP is considered the fetal counterpart of serum albumin, with both genes located tandemly on chromosome 4. AFP exists in monomeric, dimeric, and trimeric forms, and can bind copper, nickel ions, fatty acids, and bilirubin. AFP levels in amniotic fluid are used to screen for spina bifida and anencephaly. Elevated serum AFP is observed in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), teratoblastoma, colorectal, pancreatic cancers, and germ cell neoplasms.
