Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and participate in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes. Mammalian mitoribosomes also lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary significantly among species, making sequence homology recognition difficult. This gene encodes a 28S subunit protein known as mitochondrial ribosomal protein S35.
