Target Information
This gene encodes the coagulation factor XIII A subunit. Coagulation factor XIII is the last zymogen to become activated in the blood coagulation cascade. Plasma factor XIII is a heterotetramer composed of two A subunits and two B subunits. The A subunits have catalytic function, while the B subunits serve as plasma carrier molecules. Platelet factor XIII consists of two A subunits identical to those in plasma. Upon activation by thrombin and calcium ions, the A subunits form the active enzyme factor XIIIa, which acts as a transglutaminase to stabilize fibrin clots by crosslinking fibrin molecules. Deficiency of factor XIII can lead to bleeding disorders, impaired wound healing, and habitual abortion.
