Mucins (MUCs) are heavily glycosylated glycoproteins synthesized as membrane-bound or secreted proteins. They have aberrant expression profiles in various malignancies and play a protective role for epithelial tissues. Mucins are expressed in the gastrointestinal, respiratory, and genito-urinary tracts, and may be involved in epithelial renewal, differentiation, cell adhesion, and signaling.
MUC5B is vital for maintaining oral health and may be associated with respiratory and oral diseases. Its expression has been studied in gastric carcinoma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
