Target Information

This gene encodes a transmembrane receptor commonly referred to as DC-SIGN, expressed on the surface of dendritic cells and macrophages. The encoded protein participates in the innate immune system and recognizes a wide range of pathogens, including parasites and viruses.
The protein structure includes:

  • N-terminal transmembrane domain
  • Tandem-repeat neck domain
  • C-type lectin carbohydrate recognition domain

The extracellular region functions as both a pathogen recognition receptor and a cell adhesion receptor, binding carbohydrate ligands on microbial and host cell surfaces. The neck region enables homo-oligomerization, allowing high-avidity binding to multivalent ligands.
Variations in the neck domain’s amino acid repeats can affect ligand-binding ability. DC-SIGN is closely related to L-SIGN (GeneID 10332) but differs in binding properties and tissue distribution.
Alternative splicing generates multiple variants.
