Involucrin은 각질형성세포의 교차결합된 막 단백질 구조체의 구성 요소로, 세포질에 존재하며 트랜스글루타민에 의해 막 단백질과 교차결합됩니다. 다양한 중층 편평 상피(예: 각막)에서 발현되며, 정상 표피에서는 상부 가시층에서 처음 발현됩니다. 편평세포암 및 전암 병변에서는 Involucrin 발현이 비정상적이며, 후두 및 자궁경부의 중증 이형성에서는 감소합니다. 유전자는 염색체 1q21에 위치하며, calpactin I light chain, trichohyalin, profillaggrin, loricrin, calcyclin과 함께 존재합니다.
