Target Information
ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone) is a hormone that plays a major role in stimulating the adrenal cortex. It is formed through cleavage of the polypeptide precursor proopiomelanocortin (POMC), which also produces several other cleavage products including MSH, ACTH, and beta endorphin. ACTH is secreted from the anterior pituitary in response to corticotropin-releasing hormone from the hypothalamus. It stimulates the secretion of glucocorticoids such as cortisol, but has limited influence on mineralocorticoid secretion like aldosterone, another major adrenal cortex hormone.
