Target Information
H-NS is a DNA-binding protein involved in transcriptional repression (silencing) and bacterial chromosome organization. It binds tightly to AT-rich dsDNA, inhibiting transcription and forming nucleoid clusters that compact DNA. H-NS regulates horizontally transferred genes, controls thermal responses such as pili and curli fimbriae formation, and represses CRISPR-cas promoters. Its DNA-binding cooperativity decreases with temperature, and it can influence transcriptional elongation and translational efficiency of mRNA with weak Shine-Dalgarno sequences.
