Specificity Comments:
Fatty acid-binding proteins (FABPs) are a family of homologous cytoplasmic proteins expressed in a tissue-specific manner, playing key roles in lipid and carbohydrate metabolism. FABPs mediate fatty acid and hydrophobic ligand uptake, transport, and targeting. They are expressed in adipocytes (A-FABP), brain (B-FABP), epithelium (E-FABP), striated muscle and heart (H-FABP), intestine (I-FABP), liver (L-FABP or FABP1), myelin (M-FABP), and testis (T-FABP).
FABP1 (L-FABP) expression is influenced by developmental, hormonal, dietary, and pharmacological factors, and is essential for cholesterol synthesis and metabolism.
Target Information
FABP1 encodes the fatty acid binding protein found in the liver. These small, conserved cytoplasmic proteins bind long-chain fatty acids and hydrophobic ligands. FABP1 and FABP6 can also bind bile acids. FABPs are involved in fatty acid uptake, transport, and metabolism.
