Target Information
Estrogen Receptors (ER) are members of the steroid/thyroid hormone receptor superfamily of nuclear receptors. The estrogen receptor is a ligand-activated transcription factor that, when bound to estrogen, undergoes a conformational change enabling dimerization and binding to estrogen response elements (ERE) in DNA. This interaction regulates gene transcription through coactivator or corepressor recruitment.
There are two forms of the estrogen receptor, alpha and beta, encoded by ESR1 and ESR2, respectively. Alternative RNA splicing produces at least four ER-alpha isoforms (66 kDa, 53 kDa, 47 kDa, 35 kDa). ERs are widely expressed in various tissues, essential for sexual development and reproduction, and are implicated in diseases such as breast and endometrial cancers, and osteoporosis.
