Target Information
ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone) plays a major role in stimulating the adrenal cortex. It is formed through cleavage of the polypeptide precursor proopiomelanocortin (POMC), which also produces MSH and beta endorphin. ACTH is secreted from the anterior pituitary in response to corticotropin-releasing hormone from the hypothalamus. It stimulates glucocorticoid secretion (e.g., cortisol) but has limited influence on mineralocorticoid (aldosterone) secretion.
