Target Information
Beta-catenin is an adherens junction (AJ) protein involved in cell-cell adhesion and epithelial layer maintenance. It interacts with E-cadherin and alpha-catenin to anchor the adhesion complex to the actin cytoskeleton. Beta-catenin also associates with signaling complexes including adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) protein and microtubules, participating in pathways such as Wnt/Wingless signaling. Dysregulation of beta-catenin is implicated in various cancers including colorectal, ovarian, and breast cancers. In the nucleus, beta-catenin co-activates Lef/Tcf transcription factors that promote expression of cell proliferation genes such as cyclin D and c-myc.
