Target Information
KCNQs are members of the voltage-dependent non-inactivating potassium channel family. There are five known KCNQs (KCNQ1–5) found in the central nervous system. KCNQ3 and KCNQ5 can form heteromultimers that substantially increase the M-current. Inhibition of M-current regulates neuronal excitability and synaptic responsiveness. Mutations in these proteins are associated with benign familial neonatal convulsions (BFNC), deafness, neuropathic pain, and epilepsy. Voltage-dependent potassium channels regulate resting membrane potential and modulate excitability in electrically active cells. These channels are typically tetrameric and may interact with auxiliary subunits that modify channel properties.
