Target Information
The Ca²⁺/calmodulin-dependent protein kinases (CaM kinases) constitute a structurally related subfamily of serine/threonine kinases, including CaMKI, CaMKII, and CaMKIV.
CaMKII is a ubiquitously expressed serine/threonine protein kinase activated by Ca²⁺/calmodulin binding and autophosphorylation. It regulates the cell cycle, transcription, dendritic spine and synapse formation, neuronal plasticity, and sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca²⁺ transport in skeletal muscle.
In neurons, CaMKII plays a structural role in actin cytoskeleton reorganization during plasticity by binding and bundling actin filaments in a kinase-independent manner.
