Target Information
This antimicrobial gene belongs to a cluster of chemokine genes located on the q-arm of chromosome 17. Chemokines form a superfamily of secreted proteins that regulate immune and inflammatory responses. The CC subfamily, to which this chemokine belongs, is characterized by two adjacent cysteine residues. MCP-2/CCL8 exhibits chemotactic activity for monocytes, lymphocytes, basophils, and eosinophils. By recruiting leukocytes to sites of inflammation, this cytokine may contribute to tumor-associated leukocyte infiltration and antiviral defense mechanisms, including responses against HIV infection.
